HSUHK Innovation Project Competition 2026
About the Competition
The “HSUHK Innovation Project Competition” (“the Competition”), organised by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), aims to foster a culture of innovation and creativity among HSUHK students while raising their awareness of critical social issues, both locally and globally. Through diverse training methods and selected themes, as well as the opportunity to showcase project proposals via on-stage pitching, the Competition also seeks to enrich the student learning experience at HSUHK.
This year, we invite you to engage with the critical cultural issues facing Hong Kong today. In an era of rapid globalisation, our unique local heritage and traditions are at risk of being overshadowed. As HSUHK students, you have the opportunity to harness your creativity and insights to bridge generational divides, revitalise intangible cultural practices, and advocate for the preservation of our important heritage sites. By participating in this Competition, you can develop innovative solutions that resonate within our university and strengthen the cultural identity of Hong Kong. Your contributions can enhance intercultural dialogue and ensure that future generations appreciate the richness of our shared heritage, fostering unity and resilience within HSUHK and beyond.
We are grateful to have a new strategic partner Department of Art and Design (AAD), and continue our partnership with the Institute for Youth Sustainability Leadership (IYSL) and the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).
Theme of the Year: Cultural Challenge in Hong Kong
The theme for the 2026 HSUHK Innovation Project Competition is “Cultural Challenge in Hong Kong” integrating key issues such as (1) Cultural Homogenisation, (2) Intergenerational Disconnection, (3) Intangible Heritage at Risk, and (4) Heritage Site Preservation. In an increasingly globalised society, it is essential to safeguard our unique cultural identity and foster connections across generations. As students of HSUHK, you are uniquely positioned to champion innovative solutions that address these challenges, promoting awareness of local heritage, bridging communication gaps between age groups, and protecting valuable cultural practices and sites.
Through your participation in this Competition, you can:
Make a Meaningful Impact: Your creative ideas can help combat cultural homogenisation, foster intergenerational dialogue, and promote the preservation of intangible heritage and historic sites within our community.
Gain Practical Skills: By tackling these interconnected issues, you will enhance your critical thinking, project management, and advocacy skills—attributes highly valued by employers.
Build Valuable Connections: Engaging in workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities with cultural leaders and heritage experts will help you form relationships that could lead to collaborative projects and career opportunities.
Showcase Your Innovations: This is your platform to present your ideas and solutions to a panel of judges, refining your presentation and communication skills—essential tools for success in any profession.
Celebrate Cultural Diversity: As we come together to address these vital issues, your involvement will contribute to a legacy of cultural awareness and preservation at HSUHK. What better way to mark our commitment to sustaining our rich heritage than by playing an active role in shaping a more resilient and inclusive future?
“Cultural Challenge in Hong Kong” Project Categories
Your project can address one or more of the following categories, offering you flexibility to target the area you are most passionate about:
Cultural Homogenisation
Intergenerational Disconnection
Intangible Heritage at Risk
Heritage Site Preservation
Hong Kong is becoming more culturally similar to the rest of the world as globalisation and technology influence daily life. Local languages, traditions, and lifestyles are fading, creating challenges in keeping Hong Kong’s unique culture alive.
Explore how globalisation and mass media contribute to the dilution of local culture.
Hong Kong faces intergenerational disconnection as technology gaps, shifting values, and physical separation widen the divide between the young and the elderly.
Address the growing gap between generations in understanding and appreciating cultural heritage.
Hong Kong has many rich living traditions, but rapid urban change and global influences are causing its stories, crafts, rituals, music, dance, and local languages to slowly disappear.
Protect practices and traditions that are not physically documented but are crucial to cultural identity.
Hong Kong’s heritage sites are facing pressure from rapid urban development, tourism, limited funding, and complex conservation rules, which makes it difficult to protect historic buildings and places while also meeting modern city needs.
Ensure the conservation and appropriate use of historical sites while managing pressures from urban development.
