SEN, ASD, ADHD, PD… A series of important acronyms were clearly decrypted at the Teaching Enhancement Seminar Series #2 on 26 January 2023, co-organised by the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Section, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), and the Student Affairs Office (Inclusion and Diversity).

In view of the emerging challenges confronted by our students with diverse needs and staff,  over 20 of our HSUHK teachers and administrators had a fruitful morning learning all about how our Special Education Needs (SEN) students could enjoy the best educational journey, thanks to the visit of Ms Josanna LAI, a registered clinical psychologist, Mr Ivan Lam, the Institute Manager of the Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-Bodied (PHAB) Association, and Mr Andy Ko, the Institute Trainer of the same PHAB Association.

With the aim of helping transforming our University into a model of promoting “inclusiveness of disabilities” in the higher education sector in Hong Kong, this seminar walked the participants through the characteristics of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The seminar started by Mr Lam introducing this meaningful organisation, the Hong Kong PHAB Association, which was established in 1972 to promote a pluralistic society. Then Ms Lai, together with her over 20 years of clinical experience, had the whole room educated and enlightened, with her focus on cases she handled relating to students of higher education institutes (HEI). Billed as the Regenerative Warrior himself, Mr Ko, sharing based on his life in a wheelchair, then invited the participants to experience the challenges of physical disabilities and discuss the suggestions and solutions so as to build a barrier-free environment on our campus, and in our community as a whole.

SEN, ASD, ADHD, PD…
